The built environment provides a unique opportunity to frame
and create scenes of experience for the user. As in Habitat 67, the monolithic
structure with its mass to space ratio, provides an ever changing experience for
the inhabitants and the observers. Though the individual geometry of each of
the 'boxes' is simple and cohesive to the individual, the mass connectivity and
the complex construction proves to create a unique and intriguing formation.
Shading and framing in places while extruding and justifying in others, the
formation of the structure changes depending on the angle and the user. At a
distance, a mountain-like structure is created without the sense of home or
human habitation, but on closer inspection, traditional spaces are created and
human scale and sense is achieved. In the image below, there is an interesting
perspective captured. I'm sure it was not predicted by the architect, but the
multi-dimensional nature of this building seduces the idea of exploration of
the new and undiscovered. Unless you have spent time within and around this
building, there may always be confusion and intrigue as to the construction,
spatial relationship, the new and possible unwanted perspectives created...
This is the intrigue that I want to create within Paddington
Central. By providing space for exploration and intervention, Paddington may
become not only a place of home and safety, but a place of opportunity and
discovery within the community life. The multitude of spaces available within
the site gives itself up to many possible uses, whether predicted or not.
