W13 Reading Reflection: Retail Theatre

Retail Theatre
Lennie Kwan

The discussion of play as more than a game intrigues me. Playfulness describes a way of being, acting and perceiving. You don't need to be doing anything to feel playful and there is no set of rules describing what an object needs to be to be a part of play.

"Caillois (2001) describes play as non-obligatory, an occasion of pure waste: waste of time, energy, ingenuity, skill, and often of money. However, Caillois (2001) believes that there is value in this waste as play is part of the essential element of human social and spiritual development and has elements of make-believe and unreality. " (page 1)

In my opinion, there is no reason why we must assume play as an unrealistic sense of "make-believe". Play can be a way of feeling about things, interact with things. In the context of Paddigton Central, play is to be an interaction with the building and the community within it.

"... if playfulness is perceived as fun, it is more important to find out if playfulness and fun would lower or increase the perceived value of the products." (page 1)

Paddington Central, as a product of Paddington, will basically be a facilitator for exploration and opportunity. The importance of the building will be surpassed by the interaction that occurs within it.
