W15 Final Words

To the past 15 weeks, there has been a lot of development, driven by many different influences. The outcomes of a playful, exploritory and experimental environment have been some of the most interesting roads I have gone down through a design subject.

Overall I am extremely happy with not only my outcomes, but my process, and the things I have learnt along the way. I hope all I have learned will carry me through and influence me as I progress into my Masters in 2013.

W14 Exemplar: Active & Healthy Brisbane

As a part of a holistic part of health, play and community, Brisbane should be promoting programs such as "Active & Healthy" that runs on the Gold Coast:

Active & Healthy Gold Coast Website

It promotes free or low cost exercise, cooking and community programs set in various locations around the city, from community centres, health centres and parks. This is a useful way of promoting a sense of place, community and healthy habits without incurring the unappealing costs of traditional exercise methods.

A Playful and Healthy Brisbane
An intervention to the increased sedentary lifestyle of todays population. A method of getting people out of their homes to interact and work together for health and community. Relaxation as something you actively do rather than a passive and stagnant state of being.

Paddington Opportunities
As a future prospect, Paddington Central would use its external green spaces to promote this kind of living. It involves local business for the exercise/cooking training and changes the way people think about spaces. Instead of Paddington Central having a series of hills that only children run down for fun, they may be used as platforms for exercise - promoting health through cardio and running groups.

The large green platforms on levels 3 & 4 can be used for yoga and pilates, creating a reflective inward community space, drawing on a greater context for relaxation and exercise.
Breaking the boundaries of exercise into the open will also encourage others to join, set good examples for children and generally anyone who visits the site.

W13 Reading Reflection: Retail Theatre

Retail Theatre
Lennie Kwan

The discussion of play as more than a game intrigues me. Playfulness describes a way of being, acting and perceiving. You don't need to be doing anything to feel playful and there is no set of rules describing what an object needs to be to be a part of play.

"Caillois (2001) describes play as non-obligatory, an occasion of pure waste: waste of time, energy, ingenuity, skill, and often of money. However, Caillois (2001) believes that there is value in this waste as play is part of the essential element of human social and spiritual development and has elements of make-believe and unreality. " (page 1)

In my opinion, there is no reason why we must assume play as an unrealistic sense of "make-believe". Play can be a way of feeling about things, interact with things. In the context of Paddigton Central, play is to be an interaction with the building and the community within it.

"... if playfulness is perceived as fun, it is more important to find out if playfulness and fun would lower or increase the perceived value of the products." (page 1)

Paddington Central, as a product of Paddington, will basically be a facilitator for exploration and opportunity. The importance of the building will be surpassed by the interaction that occurs within it.

W13 Tutorial Reflection

Today was the final tutorial before submission. I decided to show Peter a series of proposed views for presentation:

View of Markets

Internal Kindergarten Courtyard

View from Markets into Gardens

Latrobe Tce/Warmington St Corner

Latrobe Tce Elevation

Rear View of Building

View of Market & Upper Levels

These will attempt to exemplify the criteria of "First Person Experience", "Navigation", "Presence and Identity" and "Purpose".

I also spoke to Peter about my presentation format, using a reference system of experiences through the site:

After the final discussion, I got approval for my direction from Peter.
